About Aequitas Collective

The name is Latin. Aequitas* — fairness, symmetry, the even weight of the scales. It is what every system claims as its purpose and what most systems, under sufficient pressure, quietly abandon.


On calling things what they are

There is a recurring pattern in financial crime. When an act becomes sufficiently common among sufficiently powerful people, it gets renamed. The language softens. Tax evasion becomes aggressive avoidance. Fraud becomes misrepresentation. Kleptocracy becomes sovereign wealth management. The renaming is not accidental. It is the first line of defence.

A tax cheat is a thief. A corrupt public official is a thief. A fraudulent fund manager is a thief. These are not rhetorical positions — they are accurate descriptions, and maintaining accurate descriptions is the beginning of accountability.

This is the instinct at the centre of everything Aequitas Collective does. The work varies. The instinct does not.


The work

Adam Hunt’s career began in the early 1990s in the machine rooms of corporate IT. It moved through the intelligence functions of the NZ Inland Revenue and the Financial Markets Authority, into global advisory roles with the IMF, the ADB, and the OSCE, and into the boardrooms of technology companies and capital markets firms.

Three threads run through all of it.

Catching thieves. Not as a rhetorical flourish — as a literal description of sustained practice. Revenue intelligence, AML architecture, enforcement design, anti-corruption advisory: this is the work of making systems honest and keeping them that way. It requires understanding not just the rules but the full range of ways intelligent people circumvent them, and the vocabulary they use to make circumvention look respectable.

Coaching the balance sheet. Founders in complex, regulated sectors often know their technology or their science far better than they know their capital structure. We work alongside them — structuring funding, reading regulatory risk, thinking clearly about growth — as a practitioner who has been in those rooms, not an adviser who has read about them.

Governing well. Independent directorship means asking the questions that are inconvenient to ask. It means the difference between a board that governs and a board that ratifies. A values-based culture is not a statement in the annual report; it is a test applied to every decision, including the ones that feel small at the time.


How we work

Aequitas Collective is deliberately small. We take a limited number of engagements at any time and bring the full weight of the practice to each one.
